3 Things To Ask Your Home Inspector

When you are looking for the right new home, it can be scary to be faced with the fact that you could buy a new home and be left dealing with thousands of dollars worth of necessary repairs. However, by doing what you can to find out as much as you can about the property, you could ward off issues. Here are three things you should ask your home inspector and why.

1. Would You Buy This House?

Although it may seem like an unrelated question, asking home inspectors if they would buy the house if they were in your shoes is a great way to get their personal opinion without asking for it outright. Talk with home inspectors about what they think as far as the home is concerned, and ask them if they would feel comfortable investing.

Oftentimes, you may hear from the home inspector on a more personal note, such as what they think about the area or how serious they think the issues in your home really are.

2. What Will Probably Need to Be Replaced First?

Every home has problems, but some of those issues are more serious than others. While some issues could be resolved with a little paint or new carpet, others may need a complete overhaul. When you talk with your home inspector, ask which appliances or home components you should expect to replace first and which ones could probably wait. By asking this simple question, you can decide whether or not you can truly afford the home, or if you should look for something a little more turnkey.

3. Should Anyone Else Be Consulted?

Sometimes, home inspectors simply don't have all of the tools in their toolbox to identify issues that may stem from other problems. For instance, if you have a plumbing issue, inspectors may not have a camera guided system to spot the source of the clog. Ask home inspectors if you should call out any other professionals during the due diligence period to find the severity of the problem, such as exterminators, landscapers, or even structural engineers.

While it can seem intimidating to work with a home inspector, doing your due diligence and working hard to learn more about your property could really pay off in the long run. Professional home inspections can help you to save time and money, while also protecting you from making a bad investment. Don't be shy about asking home inspectors in your area to come out and take a look at your prospective home.
